Northern Uganda Widows and Orphans Support Organization (NUWOSO) was founded in 2005 by a group of women survivors of armed conflict, the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and disaster in Northern Uganda. NUWOSO has grown from a grassroots community group into a women-led, women's rights, humanitarian and development-focused National NGO. It is administered with strong community participation and ownership, giving it deep, trusted knowledge of the local context and the real needs of the people it serves. NUWOSO started as an informal community group working at village level in Patongo–Agago County, Acholi Sub-Region. The founders worked directly with women and children affected by the 20-year Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. They provided HIV prevention, care and support services, economic and livelihood assistance, and protection. This work helped survivors rebuild their lives and restore hope after years of war violence and gender-based violence. In 2010, NUWOSO registered formally as a Community-Based Organization (CBO) in Agago District and expanded its programs to sub-county level. During this period, the organization strengthened its post-conflict recovery work. This included sustainable economic and livelihood support, protection of women and children from gender-based violence, mental health and psychosocial support with therapy services, vocational skills training, job creation for youth, and community-level advocacy for women's and children's rights. In 2019, NUWOSO achieved legal registration as a National NGO in Uganda. This marked its shift from basic humanitarian support to holistic, integrated programming. NUWOSO now operates nationwide, guided by its Strategic Framework. NUWOSO five-year Strategic Plan (2025–2030) is built around seven priority programs. 1.Integrated Health Program 2.Sustainable Economic and Livelihood Empowerment Program 3.Human Rights, Gender and Protection Program 4.Education Services and Support to OVC (Orphans and Vulnerable Children) Program 5.Sustainable Environmental Protection and Climate Change Mitigation & Adaptation Program 6.Coordination and Advocacy Program 7.Organizational Capacity, Systems and Governance Strengthening. These programs work together to build the abilities and resilience of women and children, creating immediate and lasting change in their lives. This advances NUWOSO's Vision: Empowered and resilient Women and Children in Uganda. where every child under 18 and every woman has equal rights to health, survival, protection, and socio-economic development and participation. NUWOSO envisions a society where women and children live as equals, with dignity, autonomy, and equal opportunity. Its work prioritizes the most marginalized, vulnerable, and disadvantaged women, children, and youth in all their diversity, including persons with disabilities.
